Spice up Your Life!
Laurie Dean, AP
The science of Ayurveda places great emphasis on incorporating spices in our food. A well stocked spice box is an essential component in an Ayurvedic kitchen, as it is in many other cultures around the world. Here are a few compelling reasons why! While spices give our food delicious flavor, they are also full of potent medicinal power. That is why we don't need to add a lot of spice to our food - compared to the quantity of food that we eat. Rich in nutrients, antioxidants and minerals, spices are powerhouses - helping to protect the body from dis-ease with their curative properties. Proper use of spices can help to strengthen our digestion so we receive the full value from the food we take in, and also help us by boosting our immunity. Digestion is so important to maintaining good health! Ayurveda references our digestion as Agni - the digestive fire. As with any fire, it is important to keep the digestive fire well stoked so that it will burn properly. Proper digestion is important to prevent the accumulation of what in Ayurveda, is described as ama. Ama is the byproduct of poorly digested food. When digestive fire is properly fueled, we are able to use the food we take in to nourish our body and help build our tissues. This provides the foundation of cellular metabolism. The timeless wisdom of Ayurveda has also understood the profound connection between our ability to digest well and the state of our mind. When our physical digestion is strong, we are also able to assimilate and “digest” experiences in our life. An integral aspect of Ayurveda and Yoga is the understanding of the profound mind-body connection. Spices have been used for centuries as natural stress relievers. Chamomile, holy basil, and nutmeg are just a few examples of spices that have calming properties that help promote relaxation, quiet the mind, and improve sleep quality. Incorporating them into our meals or enjoying as herbal teas can have a soothing effect on our mental well being. According to Ayurveda, each dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) will benefit from the use of different spices. The seasons (ritucharya) also play a role in choosing what to use and when. An Ayurvedic professional can help you discern what spices may help you improve digestion, or help work with an issue you may be experiencing. |
